What are Complete Streets?
The Complete Streets approach reimagines streets to serve everyone better, regardless of age, ability, or mode of transportation. It’s about creating a balanced transportation system that prioritizes safety, comfort, and access to destinations for everyone with features like wide, shaded sidewalks; protected bike lanes; comfortable and accessible transit stops; frequent and safe crossings; and pedestrian-friendly signals. Complete Streets design, planning and policies seek to transform streets into vibrant public spaces that improve public health, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance our overall quality of life.
By embracing the Complete Streets approach, Miami Gardens is not just redesigning roadways; we’re fostering a healthier, more connected community. These changes aim to ensure that whether you’re walking, biking, driving, or using public transit, you’ll have a safe and enjoyable journey to your destination.
Working Toward Street Safety in Miami Gardens
In 2014, the City of Miami Gardens’ Comprehensive Development Master Plan identified Complete Streets as a design approach that could progress the City towards its goals by guiding expansion of a multimodal transportation network that accounted for the safety of users of all ages and abilities.
In 2022, the City of Miami Gardens Council adopted the Complete Streets Initiative Framework as a resolution to reaffirm its commitment to Complete Streets and to begin development of the Miami Gardens Complete Streets Guidelines. The new Miami Gardens Complete Streets Guidelines fulfills Objective 1.6, Policy 1.6.1 of the Miami Gardens Comprehensive Development Master Plan to adopt a Complete Streets Manual and Policy. The Guidelines are meant to work in tandem with existing documents including the Miami Gardens Traffic Calming Guidelines, the Miami Dade County Vision Zero Plan, The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) Design Guides, and the Florida Greenbook (Manual of Uniform Minimum Standards for Design, Construction and Maintenance for Streets and Highways).
Community Voice
Residents of the City of Miami Gardens have provided input and guidance regarding their bicycling, pedestrian, public transit, and driving experiences and priorities throughout the development of the Guidelines. As Complete Streets initiative moves forward, resident voices remain crucial. Residents should explore the Guidelines, share thoughts with staff and representatives, and help create a city that reflects collective aspirations for safety, sustainability, and livability.
