About 2020 Census
What Is the Census?
The Census is a nationwide count of all the people who live in the United States of America. It happens every 10 years and it provides important information that helps structure our communities for the next 10 years!
Why Take the Census?
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2020), “The census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support for you and your community. Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data”.
What We Are Doing:
UHP currently leads projects focused on improving health and equity in three City of Miami communities: Overtown, Allapattah, and Little Havana. Residents (“CLs”) from these communities (8 total) work with community members and stakeholders to co-design each project and conduct meaningful community engagement that has lasting impact.
The Census 2020 grant leverages the work already being conducted in these communities by providing additional training and paid hours to CLs to focus on census outreach. Due to their trusted status as residents with strong connections within their communities, CLs will help increase the number of participants and address barriers to census participation by dispelling myths, increasing awareness of its importance, reducing language barriers, and building safe spaces to ask questions and participate. This is particularly salient as these communities include target population of immigrant and undocumented residents who may fear participation.
Project Activities
NOTE: Due to COVID-19 our team is working remotely until in-person activities are reinstated. Our team and partners are in constant communication while transitioning to conduct outreach activities virtually and staying informed.
The following activities will be completed through the 2020 Census project:
• Training for CLs on the Census 2020 and the project goals
• Community partner outreach and development of strategic collaborations
• Outreach and support to gather community questions and concerns on the 2020 Census
• Data and information tracking and documenting
• Consistent support and technical assistance for Community Liaisons (CLs) and Community Health Workers (CHWs)
• Conduct 1 (potentially virtual) community hub at each community (Little Havana, Overtown, Allapattah) (3 total)
• Complete evaluation of findings and reporting
Remember to answer this survey based on where you live starting April 1, 2020.
